Stuff & Things

I didn't have anything worth writing an entire post about today. It's been a weird week. I am definitely feeling the effects of a winter slump. In an attempt to connect all of the random thoughts in my head I'm linking up with Joey and Kristin

- I haven't done a lot of travelling (or any compared to some people) but J. really wants to plan a trip so I'm trying to squash my over abundance of travel anxieties so that when the time comes to do less talking and more actual planning I'll be prepared. Luckily, there won't be any trips until fall at the earliest because camp life is not conductive to summer holidays.

- I am so excited to be partnered with Elizabeth from This Savy Life for the first Blogging Elite swap. I picked up a few things to send yesterday while I was browsing through Target. I can't wait to put it all together and send it off. I love sending (and receiving mail). I miss the days of pen pals!

- 98% of the time I keep my phone on silent. I'm not entirely sure how I got into that habit but I did and I don't see anything wrong with it. Sure it means I might not answer messages 30 seconds after I receive them but I do check my phone and if I'm having a conversation with someone via text I carry on that conversation. I just don't want to be that person whose phone is constantly dinging or vibrating or being a distraction.

- I'm way behind on TV shows. I made the effort to watch Book of Negroes as it was airing but it's been over a month since I've caught up on any of my favourites. When I do have time to watch TV I've just been rewatching Friends, How I Met Your Mother and What Not to Wear.

- Most mornings I watch Live with Kelly & Michael while I drink my coffee and scroll though blog posts. I am almost embarrassed to admit how often I have to Google the guests to figure out who the guests are and why I'm supposed to know who they are. Celebrities don't interest me, I can't be the only one who has no concept of celebrity culture? Does this mean I'm getting old?

Confessions

Today's post is brought to you by my desire to keep up the posting momentum, not having anything specific I want to share and a lot of random thoughts swirling around in my head.

I'll start off by confessing that in the last three weeks I've developed a love for Oprah. It started innocently enough by catching "Where Are They Now?" consistently Saturday mornings as I drank my coffee. And then I watched an episode of Super Soul Sunday with Timothy Shriver. And she's been doing a lot of press lately for Selma. And then I found myself watching OWN more and more, and now I find myself totally fascinated with her life and the urge to binge watch every episode ever.

J. is in the US right now and coming back early next week, but not in time for my birthday. Last night he informed me that he's been doing some research to determine how much Vanilla Coke he's legally allowed to take over the boarder. I have concerns that he's going to appear on an episode of Boarder Security being questioned as to why he is transporting Vanilla Coke in bulk. This is a confession because I realize I've been watching wayyyy too many episodes of Border Security/Boarder Wars.

I've been procrastinating on getting the oil changed in my car for no real reason other than I don't like running time sensitive errands before work and I enjoy not leaving the house on weekends. It will happen on Saturday though, I'm psyching myself up. Mostly I just want to cross it off my to do list.

I missed doing a year in review post for 2014 because I was busy not blogging when everyone else was posting theirs but now I kind of regret it. How late is too late to make a year in review post? Is it bad if it happens in February? No? Okay, good.

I got out of the habit of meal planning and it's starting to catch up with me. The daily game of "what am I going to bring to eat at work" is not fun. And on one occasion last week I ate gingerbread Oreos, half a bagel, a can of coke and called it a meal. I am working on stopping the madness though. Except that I have a huge craving for Wendy's that needs satisfying.

I got a new camera lens for Christmas and have only used it once. My only excuse is that it's too cold outside and the lightning inside isn't great. That's not actually an excuse, but that's what I'm offering up.

For my final confession I'll let all the blogging world know I'm ending this post so I can make garlic bread to eat while I watch My 600 lb Life. You can judge me it you wish, I'm judging myself.

Linking up with Melissa!

Two Cups of Coffee

Getting enough sleep is something I've really been working on lately. I know I function best when I get a solid 8-9 hours, not to mention I'm a much happier person. I can function without that much, someday I'll regale you all with the time at camp when I went 72 hours with only a few hour long naps in there because of a busy week and a particularly challenging camper. I ended up being sent to bed my direction after I declared I was going to jump in the shower real quick with a bagel in my hand. And then sighed and said something along the lines of "I'm sad my bagel will get soggy". One of my finer camp exhaustion moments for sure.

My usual bedtime routine involves watching the first 15-20 minutes of the 10 o'clock news downstairs with my parents and then going upstairs to get ready for bed. I brush my teeth, wash my face, put pyjamas on and have my journal/quiet time. By 11 I'm in bed with the lights out. Sometimes I'll end up texting a friend or reading a few blogs that I missed during the day but by 12 I shut it down and declare it "real bedtime". More often than not I'll put on a show with the sleep timer for an hour and I'm never awake long enough to see how it ends.

Not last night though.

Last night things were going as planned until midnight but I was still feeling really restless, borderline anxious and just couldn't shut my brain off. So I read a chapter of Little Women and then I was still wide awake. So then I read a chapter of Crazy Love. And I was still awake. Wide awake. With such pressing questions as:

I hope all my tossing and turing isn't keeping Peyton awake.
Do I have a blog post scheduled for tomorrow?
I think tomorrow I'll read 1 Peter, it's not a book I think about much but I love the name Peter so I should read the book.
Right now I should go to sleep.
My feet are cold.
I hope the Pioneer Woman had a good birthday today.
I think I want a cheesecake for my birthday cake this year.
I need to find a pair of slippers to fit my tiny feet.
Maybe I should get up, move around a bit then go back to bed.
Nope, too cold.
What should I have for lunch tomorrow?
I hope Peyton is warm enough.
I should cut my hair.
I could read through my Twitter feed.
I need to tweet more.
I'm sad Auburn lost. Years of reading southern mommy blogs have made me a SEC fan.
I've never once watched a football game.
If I move to Texas I'll have to go to one.
I hope Tim Tebow does something productive with his life.
Why has Ellen been repeats for so long. I miss her.
And Tony. I really miss Tony.
It's been awhile since I've had Frosted Flakes.

Somewhere between contemplating a wide variety of breakfast cereals and remembering I don't really like cereal in the first place I fell asleep. At which point I had crazy dreams involving a variety of Food Network Chefs, a marching band from Alabama and Mickey Mouse. And a competition to make the best gravy. Naturally my grandma showed up, made her gravy and beat them all.

So on that note I'm going to go make my second cup of coffee and probably eat some pizza because it's National Pizza Week and that's something that needs to be celebrated.

What goes through your mind late at night when you can't fall asleep?

Monday Musings

I was originally planning on posting my "Word of the Year" post today but then I realized that today is one of those days where I just need to share my random thoughts about life and its happenings opposed to anything even remotely thought out with lots of pictures and (mostly) grammatically correct sentences. So bare with me and tune in tomorrow for my word of the year reveal.

I have my word all ready to go but then I started thinking I should have a verse too? Does anybody else choose a verse for the year? I'm obviously familiar with choosing a word. And I know of people who choose life verses for their children or a verse for their marriage but I've never been exposed to a verse for the year. I like the idea, but it's also overwhelming to try and choose a verse for the entire year in a day or two.

Last night I was totally on top of things and portioned out a bunch of fruit and spinach to make a smoothie this morning to sip on while I read through blogs. This morning I got up and was magnetically drawn to the Keurig where I brewed myself a cup of French Vanilla coffee and have yet to make myself truly regret said decision. Points for trying right?

I was supposed to hang out with one of my best and oldest friends last night while he's home from university. Then his parents decided to head to the city a day early because of the impending snow storm so he wouldn't miss his flight back to school.

Speaking of snow. There are 160 cm of snow down. That's over 5 feet for those of you on the imperial measurement system. There's another snow storm in the forecast for tomorrow. We are 30 cm away from beating the previous snowfall record in December that was set back in the 60s. I know Canadians are supposed to be snow-loving people of the north riding around on our polar bears, but I'm done. Summer please come soon. (And for those who are curious summer means June, because it still snows in May.)

On the flip side all this snow makes everything absolutely beautiful. Which is great because I've been taking lots of pictures. Come May I will be an expert at taking photos in the snow. Saturday I was at my grandparents and took some great ones of my Papa's boat and the warf all covered with snow. (My Papa is a lobster fisherman and my grandparents live in a tiny little fishing village.)

The internet at my house has really sucked the past few days. It makes it difficult to do all my important Tweeting, Snapchatting and Instagramming. #firstworldproblems

I just read through this post and feel a little embarrassed to push publish because it's just ridiculous. But I'm doing it anyway. I promise my posts for the rest of the week will be much more interesting. Or at least less all over the place.

I'm sharing all this randomness with the lovely ladies participating in Mingle Monday at the Life of Meg.
